I already wrote about the things I simply HAVE to do every day to have the day go well. But there are certain things that have to be done every day but that I just absolutely hate to do. I positively loathe them, but alas, they must be done. Every. Single. Day. As it turns out, other mommies have things they hate to do as well. Go figure.
Five things I simply HATE to do every day:*
*This list is in no way comprehensive.
Wake the kids up for school
I guess I could have them wake themselves up for school, But honestly, I don’t have the patience right now to teach them to do it on their own. Instead, I spend 30 minutes every morning trying to convince, cajole, and pry a sleepy 9-year-old out of bed. The poor girl is just exhausted in the mornings. But because she never wakes up on time and takes forever to get ready, no matter how early I start the process, we’re always on the verge of being late for school.
Buckle and rebuckle the toddler in his carseat
We go through this when I take the girls to school, when I go to the grocery store, when the girls need to be picked up from school, when the boys need a ride somewhere, when the kids need something else at the store. Every time I try to buckle him back in his carseat, he acts like he’s never seen a carseat in his life and screams bloody murder, arching his back, hurling himself into the back of the van, and flailing around shrieking. 10 times a day.
I remind and remind and remind. It’s ridiculous. Lately we’ve stopped reminding and started doling out consequences instead. But I hate doing that so I usually end up falling back on the ineffective reminding again. When will I ever learn?
Not my homework, the kids’ homework. I don’t do it for them, although that would be easier. What I actually do is beg, plead and remind them constantly to get on task. It takes forever and drains all my remaining energy for the day.
By this point in the day I have no energy left to think up a meal to make, prepare it, hear my kids make gagging noises while I try to eat, and then clean it all up. I just don’t. But apparently it’s “irresponsible” not to feed your children dinner. Psssh.
What other mommies are saying they simply hate to do:
“One thing I hate doing every single day (twice a day) is convincing my children to brush their teeth and reassuring them that the toothpaste they’ve been using for years is most definitely not going to burn their tongue off!”
-Becci from Swords and Snoodles
“One thing I can’t stand but do every day anyways – make dinner. I am not a great cook. I don’t feel confident in the kitchen, and I am only interested in meals that I can prep in 30 mins or less. I find it really hard to make healthy meals that everyone in my family enjoys. Lately I’ve been playing around with different “sheet pan” meals though. They are pretty simple, and I can cook the meat and veggies at the same time!”
-Jennifer from A Splendid Messy Life
“Something that I absolutely abhor is unloading the dishwasher, yet I have to do it or my kitchen ends up a train wreck for the rest of the day.”
-Whitney from Playdates on Fridays
“What I have to do every day that I simply cannot stand: Cook! I hate cooking and the kitchen in general. At least my husband can cook so I can ask him to take over some days!”
-Rebecca from Orthodox Sunflower
“Probably dishes. I’m a stay-at-home mom and we cook and eat 3 meals a day from scratch, and there are 8 people in our family, so I do a dishwasher load of dishes and wash dishes by hand twice a day. I really hate dishes but we would be in dire straits in a matter of hours if I didn’t.”
-Jenny from Unremarkable Files
I think what we can conclude from all this is that cooking and dishes are pretty much THE WORST. What do YOU hate to do every day?
